Abstract

The effects of antibiotics, penicillin and streptomycin, on vital reaction to cortisone were investigated pathologically in rabbits and the following conclusions were inferred:
1. Body weight was reduced continuously in both groups treated with cortisone alone and with cortisone plus antibiotic. Loss in body weight was most marked in cortisone plus penicillin group.
2. Erosion of the gastric mucosa was observed in some of either control or experimental groups but there was no significant difference between each group of experiments.
3. Incidence cf bacterial infections was considerably high in animals treated with cortisone, and simultaneous administration of streptomycin appeared to be superior than that of penicillin for the prevention of bacterial infections.
4. Atrophic changes in Iymphoid tissues due to cortisone administration were reduced remarkably i8 group treated with streptomycin whereas not reduced in those treated with penicillin.
5. The principal pathologic changes in liver were increase in glycogen and fatty changes There was no significant difference on the pathologic changes between cortisone alone and cortisone plus streptomycin groups. In cortisone plus penicillin group, however, relatively severe fatty changes were occured.
6. Main changes in adrenals were reduction of lipid substances in cortex, particularly in zona fasciculata and fatty degeneration in inner layer of zona reticularis. Such changes were relatively severe in group of cortisone plus penicillin but somewhat less severe in cortisone plus streptomycin group.
7. Atropic changes in thyroid glands, gonads and skeletal muscles were also slight in group of cortisone plus streptomycin.
8. Streptomycin reduced vital reaction to cortisone, particularly atropic lesions in the various organs.
