Abstract


This paper is a study of the effects of dietary protein and total pool size of albumin on the catabolic rate of serum albumin. The catabolic rate of I^(131)-serum albumin in rabbits was significantly increased as the protein intake was raised. An average biological half life of 7.7 days was obtained for animals on a low protein diet and 5.9 days for animals on a high protein diet. An impressive phenomenon observed in the experiment is that the catabolic rate was strikingly accelerated on the first day following the change of food from low protein to high protein diet.
The change of total pool size of serum albumin induced by plasmapheresis or plasma infusion revealed no significant difference in catabolic rate of albumin compared with normal state, eventhough a slight difference in catabolic rate was observed in distribution and mixing phase. When the blood plasma was replaced with plasma expender for keeping the same blood volume, the catabolic rate appealed nearly similar to that of normal state even in the phase of distribution and mixing. From the experimental results it is evident that the catabolism of serum albumin, as far as the catabolic rate is concerned, is not affected by the change of total pool size of albumin.
