Abstract

Ferrokinetic studies by Pollycove´s method from 11 normal subjects and 51 patients with various blood dyscrasias were presented.
(1) In iron deficiency anemia, an increased iron metabolism was noted, as shown by the shortened plasma-Fees-disappearance half time, increased plasma iron turnover, and rapid marrow uptake with prompt release into circulating blood of Fes. Also the prolonged mean effective hemoglobinization time, secondary splenic accumulation of Fees and the shortened mean erythron life span, indicated that intramedullary, as well as peripheral hemolysis, was present.
(2) Ferrokinetic patterns in aplastic and Slypoplastic types of aplastic anemia revealed the considerably prolonged plasma-Fe59-disappearance half time and decreased plasma iron #urnover whereas that in hyperplastic typeshowed normal or rather shortend plasma-Fe~sdisappearance half time and increased plasma iron turnover.
(3) Ferrokinetic patterns of splenic anemia were ;~imiliar to that of iron deficiency anemia, showing increased iron metabolism, shortened mean erythron life span and secondary splenic accumulation of Fees.
(4) In hemolytic anemia (hereditary spherocytosis and hemolytic anemia due to DDS intoxication), plasma-Fees-disappearance half time became: shortened, plasma iron turnover in-creased´., and splenic sequestration and destruction of erythrocytes as shown by secondary accumulation of Fes in the spleen were present.
(5) In acute leukemia, iron metabolism was markedly decreased. In certain cases, peripheral hemolysis was considered to be the contributing factor causing anemia.
