Abstract

To test the effects of cortisone and testosterone on incised wound healing, tensile strength test and histopathologic examination on healing wound and various organs were carried out.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. The mean tensile strength of wounds in the animals that were given cortisone alone showed 24.4% decrease when compared with the control group.
2. The mean tensile strength of wounds in the animals that were given testosterone alone showed 1.6% increase when compared with the control group.
3. A 16.9% decrease in the mean tensile strength of wounds in the animals that were given both cortisone and testosterone was noted when compared with the control animal group.
This suggests that the testosterone may overcome the inhibitory effects of cortisone in the rate of gaining in tensile strength in wound healing.
4. The testosterone treated animals showed moderate congestion of liver, spleen and lymphnode; congestion and minimal cortical hyperplasia of adrenal; and congestion and increase in number of immature follicles and corpus luteum of ovary.
5. The cortisone treated animals showed moderate degree of glycogen deposition, fatty and regenerative changes, and periportal round cell infiltration of liver; and atrophy of adrenal, spleen, thymus and lymphnode: and increased number of immature follicles of ovary.
6. The animals that were given both cortisone and testosterone showed congestion of various organs and similar degenerative changes that were observed in the animals treated with cortisone alone.
7. Animals treated with cortisone alone revealed a 16.3% decrease in weight whereas an insignificant change in weight was observed in the control group and in the animals that were treated with testosterone alone or both testosterone and cortisone combined.
