Abstract

To test the effects of cortisone and vitamin A on incisional wound healing the tensile strength test and histopathologic examination on healing wound and various organs were carried out.
The results obtained are as follows :
1. The mean tensile strength of wounds in the animals that were given cortisone alone exhibited 25% decrease from control level.
2. The mean tensile strength of wounds in the animals that were given vitamin A alone exhibited 7.5% increase from control level.
3. The mean tensile strength of wounds in the animals that were given both cortisone and vitamin A exhibited 13.8% decrease from control level which suggested that vitamin A overcome the inhibitory effects of cortisoneon the rate of gain in the tensile strength.
4. The animals treated with vitamins A stowed only slight congestion of the liver.
5. The animals that were received cortisone or both vitamin A and cortisone showed moderate degree of glycogen deposition, faffy change, regenerative activity, congestion, and periportal round cells infiltration of the liver, atrophy of the adrenal contex, the spleen, and the lymphnode, and increased immature thymus follicles of the ovary.
