Abstract

General anesthesia induction and emergence can be distressing for both the gorilla and the anesthesiologist. A 39-year-old 80-kg female Western lowland gorilla underwent abdominal hysterectomy. Pre-anesthetic medication included ketamine (400 mg) and detomidine (7 mg) intramuscularly. A laryngeal mask airway (size 5) was inserted and removed two minutes later. The gorilla was intubated with a standard cuffed endotracheal tube (#8.5). Rocuronium bromide (60 mg, intravenously) was used for muscle relaxation which was monitored by an acceleromyography (TOF-Watch SXⓡ (TOF)) (Fig. 1). On completion of surgery, ropivacaine hydrochloride (40 ml, 0.75%) was infiltrated at the surgical site. When the second TOF twitch appeared, the gorilla was given sugammadex (4 mg/kg) and a continuous infusion of ketamine (250 mcg/kg/min). The endotracheal tube was removed when the TOF ratio was 0.9. The gorilla showed complete emergence evidenced by regular respirations and facial grimacing. This protocol will be useful for future safe anesthetic management of primates.
