A Survey on Physical Growth of Children in the Rural Area

Abstract


A Survey was caried out toward 532 children who were registered at "Well Baby Clinic" in the selected 7 Health Centers during the period from March 1965 to the end of December 1965.
As the result of this survey, following conclusions were obtained:
1. Among the mixed feeding children, 14 months-old boys and girls group were most predominant with 10.9% and 12.6% respectively and among the breast feeding children, 13 monthsold boys group ranked the highest with 14.9% and 12 months-old girls group ranked the highest with 12.6%.
2. Regarding the birth-order, the first son and daughter revealed the highest among the mixed feeding children with 37.0% and 27.8% respectively and among the breast feeding children the fourth son and daughter rated the highest with 19.9% and 24.4% respectively, being followed by the first son and first and second daughter rating 18.4% and 20.2% respectively.
3. In terms of their father´s occupation, the most popular is "farmer" in the both of mixed and breast feeding children rating 41.2% and 58.5% respectively, which is followed by "no occupation" rating 19.5% and 13.5% respectively.
4. Out of the total registered children, 51.1% were mixed feeding children and 48.9% were breast feeding children.
5. In the status of physical growth, body weight, body length, chest circumference and head circumference of the surveyed children are lower than the standard of the Korea.
The breast feeding children under 12 months of age group are dominant than mixed feeding children in physical growth.
6. In terms of the increment of physical growth, body length increased by 10cm during 9 months in mixed feeding boys of 6 months of age.
The body length increased by more than 10 cm. in mixed feeding girls from 4 to 8 months of age.
Body weight increased by 2 kg. each in both sexes, whose ages are from 1 to 7 months of age.
Body length in breast feeding boys of 4 months of age increased by more than 11 cm.
Body length in breast feeding girls of 6 months of age increased by more than 10 cm.
The increment of body weight in both sexes of 6 months of age group are found to be rapid, but slow in older age group.
Generally, the increment of body weight of breast feeding children are more rapid than that of mixed feeding children.
