Abstract

The purpose of this study is primarily to understand the current status of mortality and life expectancy in Korea.
The data necessary for purpose were obtained from the 1966 population census report of Korea and vital statistics of Korea.
Age specific death rate was estimated by model life table, interpolation method, and life table calculated by greville´s method.
Tentative conclusions obtained are as follows:
1) Crude death rate was 8. 4 per thousand in total, 9.3 for male, 7.5 for female. Estimated age specific death rates are shown on table 3.
2) Infant mortality rate was 66.10 in male and 52.02 in female per 1,000 live births.
3) The mortality curve shows that a higher rate is observed under 1 year of age; it drops to the lowest point at around 10 years of age and rises again as age increases. In general the male mortality curve shows a higher rate than the female mortality curve.
4) A larger number of survivors was observed in the female groups than the male groups throughout all age groups.
The age estimated half-survival rate is during age group of 70-74 in male and age group of 75~79 in female.
5) Life expectancy at the age of 0 shows 58.65 years for male and 64.46 years for female in 1966.
