A Survey on Knowledge, Attitudes and Infection Status of Parasites among Junior and Senior High School Students

Abstract


This study was undertaken to evaluate the present status of parasitic infections and educational status on hygiene among Korean students from July to September, 1969. A total of 4,097 stool specimens were collected from middle and high school students and thoroughly examined under the microscope.
Also the questionnaire formula was employed to know the hygienic status of the students.
The results obtained were as follows;
1) The infection of Trichocephalus trichiurus showed the highest prevalence rate in 4,097 students and it was 62.4%. The prevalence rate of Ascaris lumbricoides was 38.1% and that of hook worm was 4.9%. Remarkable difference in the prevalence of Clonorchis sinensis was observed between the Seoul students and students of kyungsangbuk-Do (5.0%). Negative for helminthic infection appeared 21.4% among 4.097 students.
2) A total of 1,236 students replied for questionnaire formula and 60.1% of them had been taught on the epidemiology of parasites through the extracurricular teaching. About 15% of them had never been taught on it.
3) As a source of information, 58.4% of the replied students acquired knowledge on parasitic infection from school, 12.3% of them acquired from the health center, 11.6% from hospital, and 8.8% acquired from mass communication such as radio or newspaper.
In rural area, the health center and hospital or local clinic, played a great role for the health education of the students.
4) The attitudes of high school .teachers toward health education on parasitology were very satisfactory (30.6%), satisfactory (54.1%), and unsatisfactory(15.0%).5) On the result of the stool examination, 37.3% of the students believed it completely but 59.7% of them did not completely trust it.
6) About 55% of the students has had the stool examination once a year and 38.8% of the students has had the stool examination twice a year.
7) The students who have not received the results of stool examination after the periodic examination were 13.2%.
8) About 58% of Choongang and Kumran high school students go to hospital or clinic for diagnosis when they have a suspicion of parasitic infection, 36.4% of them had used anthelmintics without specific diagnosis and 5.0% of them had not any treatment on parasites.
9) The frequencies of anthelmintic administration were as follows;
The students who had administration of anthelmintics once a year were 28.9% and twice a year, 64.4%.
10) On the habit of hand washing, it appeared that only 39.6% of students have regularly washed their hand before meals, 53.0% of them irregularly, and rest of them (7.4%) have not washed their hands before meals.
11) Only 61.7% of students had a habit of hand washing after the defecation.
12) Most of students (95.4%) used to eat the beef or pork by cooking or heat treating.
13) The students who had a eating habit of raw fresh water fishes were 8.2%.
14) The students who had a experience of eating the raw crabs, crayfishes and fresh water fishes were 12.6%. Among the students who are living in the fluke endemic area, it appeared to be the rate of 20.7%.
15) In rural area, 47.9% of farmhouse utilized the stool as a fertilizer for vegetables combined with chemical fertilizer and 21.3% of them utilized the stool only as a fertilizer.
16) In urban students, 51.4% of their homes tend to eat the parasite-free vegetables, 14.4% of their homes depend upon the parasite-free vegetables absolutely, and 34.2% of their homes were indifferent to it.
