Urban Family Preferences in Sex of Children

Abstract


This survey was performed to gain knowledge on attitudes related to parents´ sex preferences among their children. Standardized questionnaires were filled out by 623 students and salary workers in Seoul during the period from 10 June ´69 to 5 July ´69 and the following findings were obtained:
1) Regarding the care of parents in their old age, the opinion that any son can take care of the parents ranks highest with 40.4%, and the opinion that the first son should take care of the parents comes next with 18.9%.
2) Regarding their intention of having more children after having three sons, satisfaction with three sons ranks highest with 46.7%, while the opinion, "though not satisfied, I would not have more children" comes next with 34.8%, and "I will try to have a daughter" ranks lowest with 13.2%.
3) Regarding their intention of having more children after having three daughters, "though not satisfied, I will not have more children" ranks highest with 37.2%, "I will try to have a boy" comes next with 30.3%, "I would be satisfied" ranks lowest with 26.8%.
4) Regarding the reasons for the wanting sons, a majority(51.8% of the respondents) answered "to continue the lineage of the family", 9.8% stated that sons are more capable than girls and 8.7% answered "to depend on in our old age".
5) Regarding the reasons for wishing to have daughters, a large majority (63.5%) stated that girls make the family happier, and 9.1% stated that girls understand parents more than boys.
6) Regarding their desired living situation after getting old if they have no sons, "I would live separately from the children" ranks highest with 38.7% "I would live with daughters" comes next with 17.0%, and "I would live with an adopted son" comes next with 6.6%.7) Regarding attitudes toward adopting sons, "I do not want to adopt sons" ranks highest with 66.4%, "I approve" comes next with 22.9% .
8) Regarding those to whom property should be given if there are no sons, intent to divide it equally among daughters ranks highest with 55.5%, intent to donate to public institutions comes next with 7.2% and intent to give it to the adopted son comes next with 4.3%.
