A Survey on Menstruation of Unmarried Working Gifls in an Urban Area

Abstract


A survey toward 400 unmarried working girls experiencing menstruation in an urban area was conducted during July 3-October 5, 1969, and the following conclusions were obtained.
A. In relation to menarche
1. Age at Menarche
An average age at menarche was 15.9. The earliest age at menarche was 12 and the latest was 20. Almost one third (31.1 per cent) of the total respondents mentioned that the first menstruation had occurred at age of 16.
By occupation, the female-teachers experienced menarche earliest with an average of 14.4 and the latest was found among the bus-girls at 16.2 of age.
2. Knowledge about menarche
The girls who had knowledge about menarche before her menstruation started was found to be 78.5 per cent of the girls responded. By occupation, the highest rate of knowing about menarche was observed among female workers working at the pharmaceutical company with 90.5 per cent, and the lowest cate was seen among the bus-girls with 38.9 per cent.
As a source of knowledge, the "teacher" was mentioned most with 36.0 per cent, and the lowest rate was found among "aunts" with 1.9 per cent.
B. In relation to the knowledge about Menstruation
1. Knowledge about menstruation
a. The girls who know the reasons for menstruation occupied 52.8 per cent.
b. Those who know the relationship between menstruation and pregnancy was found among the girls will 50.0 par cent.
c. The girls who know about the relationship between conception period and pregnancy occupied 21.8 per cent
2. Experience of having lecture on menstruation
The girls who had been taught about menstruation during the period of middle school occupied 55.3 per cent, and 24.7 per cent of the girls were not taught at all.
C. In relation to menstrual period
1. Menstrual cycle
Menstrual cycles varied as following; (a) 30 day type :48.0% (b) irregular or over 30 day type: 29.7% (c) 4 week type: 19.3% (d) 3 week type: 3.0%.
2. Length of period with Bleeding
29.5 per cent of the respondents had bleeding for 5 day, which was followed by the group of 4 days with 25.0 per cent, and 3 days group occupied 20.8 per cent.
The duration of menstruation ranged from 2 days to 7 days with an average of 4.7 days.
3. Symptoms accompanied by Menstruation
Out of tile total 91.8 per cent had some pains.
Among the symptoms, abdominal pain occupied 31.5 per cent, lumbago 27.1 per cent, neurological symptoms (depression) 16.5 per cent, and 3.5 percent were required to take a rest because of pains.
4. Treatments taken for symptoms are as following :
(a) Left without any treatment: 71.1% (b) Took sadative drugs; 24.5% (c) Took rest: 3.3%.
D. Changes with Menstruation after Employment
1. Those girls who had experienced dysmenorrhea after employment occupied 10.8 per cent.
2. Those girls who had experienced hypemenorrhea after employment occupied 29.8 per cent, while those experienced hypermenorrhea occupied 11.1 per cent.
3. Seventeen per cent of the girls experienced that their bleeding came earlier than before, but 30.7 per cent of them had later.
