Abstract

Anopheles sinensis had been suspected for many years to be the malaria vector in Korea on epidemiological grounds.
This was firstly confirmed in 1962, when Lee et al found one gland positive specimen with naturally infected sporozoites out of 5,000 A.sinensis dissected. this species had been regarded as the only vector in korea until when Hong et al suggested the probability that A. yatsushiroensis might be the second malaria vector on the basis of the similarity of this species to A.sinensis, particularly in the morphological and bionomical aspects; The species was recorded as new species for the first time in Korea during 1968. In order to prove this hypothesis and to compare the vectorial capacity between the two species. The author carried out a series of study by means of the experimental infection of mosquito and the field entomological observation.
The study was conducted in one of the maiaria foci, Bongwha Gun, Kyongsang pukdo, during the malaria season in 1969.
Some of important findings are summarized as follows:
1. A.yatsushiroensis was confirmed to be another malaria vector in Korea; sporozoites were found in the glands of this species infected with plasmodium vivax both experimentally and naturally.
2. No positive correlation between density of gametocyte and infectivity to mosquito was found in experimental infection of mosquitos; it was presumed that the quality of gametocytes (maturity) is more important than its quantity for infectiousness of the parasite to mosquito.
3. In experimental infection, A.sinnsis and A,yatsushiroensis fed on patients with plasmodium vivax harboured sporozoites 12 days and 13 days after infection when they were dissetced.
4. The rates of experimental infections in A. sinensis and A. yatsushiroensis were 17% and 9% respectively.
5. No significant differences were found in the size of oocysts fully developed in the mid-guts of the two species.
6. As several studies of the bionomics of A.sinensis in Korea have already indicated, the exophilic habit of A.sinensis was also noted in this study. author, however, found greater proportionof A.yatsushiroensis bit man indoors than outdoors.
7. The durations necessory for blood digestion for both species A. sinensis and A. yatsushiroensis were very similar; namely 53.4 hours and 55.2 hours respectively.
8. The longevity of both species was observed to be 24.2 days.
9. The overall density of the two species was determined by night time cow biting collection; A. sinensis always dominated A. yatsushiroensis throughout the mosquito breeding season. In seasonal variation of population density, A. sinensis showed its peak in July, whereas A. yatsushiroensis showed two peaks, bigger peak in June and smaller one in September.
