A Study on Intoxication Pattern and Threshold Limit of Organic Solvents

Abstract


A study was carried out in August 1970 towards 271 workers exposed to organic solvent by taking clinical symptoms and hematological finding, in an attempt to examine intoxication pattern and threshold limit currently available to work places in Korea.
1) Benzene was detected in all industry examined, and the concentration of benzene was within threshold limit (25 ppm) with the exception of china-ware (45 ppm) and rubber manufacturing industry (30 ppm).
2) Clinical symptoms complained by workers were frequently observed with the rate of 67.5% in china-ware, 25% in rubber, 17.8% electric machinery, 11.8% in printing and 6.2% in paint industry. Headache and dizziness were highest among clinical symptoms complained by workers.
3) Prevalence rate of organic slovent poisoning as whole was 19.2% of all workers examined, and was found to be 42.3% in china-ware, 17.6% in electric machinery 16.6% in rubber, 14.3% in printing, 11.1% in dyeing and 6.6% in paint industry.
4) The prevalence rate of organic solvent poisoning was distinctly increased by age and years of service.
5) In view of present industrial condition in Korea, it was considered more reasonable to take 20 ppm as threshold limit of benzene.
