Abstract

In order to examine the malignancies of the cervix of 256 cases, vaginal and cervical cytological examination by papanicolaou´s technique, and biopsy were performed. Simultaneously, the biopsy tissue scraped smears were made for each biopcy specimen.
With reference to the usefulness of the biopsy tissue scraped smear method reported here, the following points should be stressed.
1. The biopsy tissue scraped smears can give more accurate findings within a shorter period of time than the vaginal and cervical smears. The accuracies of biopsy tissue scraped smear, cervical, and viginal smear show 98.4%, 87.3%, and 53.2% respectively(Table 8 and Fig. 4).
2. The biopsy tissue scraped smears show, to some extent, the combbined diaghostic findings of both exfoliative cytology and histopathology.
3. The honeycombed epithelial cell clusters, elongated mucous-containing cells, and ciliated epithelial cells appear in the smears in almost inverse proportion to the malignant cells, and ciliated epithelial cells appear in the smears in almost inverse proportion to the malignant cells, so called seesaw phenomenon. Particularly the honeycombed epithelial cell clusters play an important role as a clue to the evidence of non-malignancy. They appear in 93.2 percent among the biopsy tissue scraped smears of the non-carcinoma group(Table5 and Fig.2), by contrast in 17.2 percent of the carcinoma group (Table 10 and Fig. 6).
4. Finally, in performing Papanicolaou smear technique and biopsy, the author would like to recommend simultaneous preparation of biopsy tissue scraped smear.
