Abstract

Since the introductionof T3 test in the clinical medicine by Hamolsky and co-corkers, this method has been acclaimed as being most simple yet accurate for the diagnosis of the thyroid diseases. However the data in the literature so far appeared have been dealing with the adult, and those on children have been relatively infrequent.
The normal values of T3 test in various age groups of 269 children and 41 adults were determined. the differences of T3 values on the basis of age and sex were also evaluated and the data were compared with those of thyroid uptake, BMR, PBI131 conversion ratio and serum cholesterol levels. Following were the results:
1. In newborn the mean T3 values were 28.6% and in the group under two years of age were 18.9% namely, the thyroid in these age groups appeared to be under hyperfunctional state. With progress of the age the T3 values showed a gradual decrease. These data coincided with those of the other workers.
2. A statistically significant difference in T3 values on the basis of sex was observed from the group of 12~14 years of age, namely, 15.4% in male and 13.3% in female
3, There existed also a statistically significant difference in T3 values between eu-, hyper-, and hypothyroidism. In children and adults with thyroid diseases, constant interrelationship between T3 BMR, thyroid uptakes, PBI131 conversion ratio and serum cholesterol levels were observed, among which the 24hr. thyroid uptake had the closest correlation.
