Abstract

The effects of acute hypoxia inducd by inhalation of 15% O₂ and 12% O₂gas mixture on hemodynamicsand pulmonary functions were studied in 20 dogs anesthetired with sodium thiopental and the following results were obtained.
I) the level of arterial oxygen satruation was reduced to approximaIy 82% when 15% O₂ mixture was inhaled(15% 02 group) and to about 68% when 12% O₂mixture was used(12% O₂ group).
2) An increased minute ventilation aftributable mainly to increment of tidal volume was noted in both groups.
3) The oxygen consumption was considerably increased only in the 12% O₂ group, however, the carbon dioxide elimination was slightly increased in both groups. As the resullts of this dissmilarity, the respiratory guotient was increased in the 15% O₂group.
4) A significant increase of cardiac output resulting from augmentation of stroke volume was observed the 12% 02O₂ group and a slight acceleration of heart rate was noted in both groups.
5) The maintenance of femoral arterial mean pressure during hypoxia was attributed to elevated total peripheral resistaiice in the 15% O₂group, and toincreased cardiac output in the 12% group.
6) The pulmonary arterial mean pressure was raised in both groups. The rise in the 15% O₂ group resulted from elevation of the total pulmonary resistance. On the other hand, increased cardiac output induced the elevation of pumonary arterial mean pressure in the 12% O₂ group.
7) No noticeble change in femoral venous pressure and right ventricular pressure was observed.
