Abstract


Serum proteins were studied in pulmonary diseases, including 15 cases of Pulmonary tuberculosis, 14 cases of exudative pleurisy, 2 cases of thoracic empyema and one case of lung abscess. The results were summarized as follows:
1. In cases of minimal pulmonary tuberculosis after chemotherapy, the serum total protein and selum albumin either normal or increased, β-globulin was decreased, and serum α_(1)-, α_(2)- and γ-globulin were normal.
2. In cases of moderately advannced pulmonary toberculosis after chemotherapy, serum total proteins were either normal or increased and β-globulin was decreased. and serum α_(1)-, α_(2)- and γ-globulin were normal
3. In cases of far advanced pulmonary tuberculosis who had no chemotherapy at all, serum total protein were either normal or increased and serum albumln was decreased, and α_(1)-, α_(2)- and γ-globulin were decreased. and serum β was normal.
4. In cases of tuberculous exudative pleurisy, serum total proteins were normal and serum albumin was decreased, serum α_(1)-, and α_(2)- globulin were increased and serum β-globulin was either normal or decreased and r-globulin was either normal or increased
5. 1 cases of exddative pleurisy complicated by pulmonary paragoinmiasis, α_(1)-, α_(2)- and γ-globulin was increased and serum albumin was decreased, and serum β-globulin was normal.
6. In cases of thoracic empyema, serum total protein and serum β-globulin were normal, and serum albulmin was decreased, and serum α_(1)-, α_(2)- and γ-globulin were increased.
7. In a case of lung abscess, serum total protein and albumin were markedly decreased, and serum α_(1)-, α_(2)- and γ-globulin were increased, and serum β-globulin was normal.
8. In cases of pulmonary tuberculosis, exudative pleurisy, thoracic empyema and lung abscess, it was observed that the serum protein fractions showed non-specific changes and the changes were returned to normal as the disease precess was improved.
9. It is believed that the serum protein fractions especially α_(2)-globulin in tuberculosis may serve as indices in evaluating the disease processes
