Influencing Factors of Club Activity, Relational Self and Empathy on Communication and Leadership in Nursing Students

Abstract


Purpose: This study was to identify influencing factors of club activity, relational self, and empathy on communication and leadership.

Methods: The participants were 168 students enrolled in a nursing college. Data were analyzed using frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and backward multiple regression analysis with SPSS Statistics 25.

Results: The variables that affect the communication among nursing students were shown in order of cognitive empathy (β=.37, p<.001), avoidance relationship of relational self (β=-.32, p<.001), empathy-care of relational self (β=.28, p=.003), grade (β=.19, p=.002), type of university club (β=-.15, p=.028), overdependence to relation of relational self (β=-.15, p=.044), reason of joining university club (β=-.14, p=.037), instrumental relationship of relational self (β=.14, p=.038). The variables that affect the leadership of nursing students were shown in order of cognitive empathy (β=.59, p<.001), instrumental relationship of relational self (β=.25, p<.001), avoidance relationship of relational self (β=-.22, p<.001), grade (β=.20, p=.005), openness to participate in university club (β=-.13, p=.021), role in university club (β=.12, p=.043), reason of joining university club (β=.12, p=.028).

Conclusion: The results of this study have shown that cognitive empathy is the a crucial factor in communication and leadership of nursing students.
