Abstract

To investigate the influence of menopause on bone mineral density(BMD) of normal Korean women, BMD of the spine was measured by dual-energy X-ray absoptiometry(DEXA) in 111 premenopausal and 337 postmenopausal women. We found highly significant
negative
correlations of BMD with age and years since menopause(YSM), and positive correlation of BMD with heigh and weight. Comparison of quinquennial menas for pre and postmenopausal women in age bands 45~49 years and 50~54 years shows that at these
ages
postmenopausal BMD is significantly lower than premenopausal BMD(p=0.0001). This finding suggests that separate normal ranges should be used for pre and postmenopausal women. Postmenopausal women showed a rapid loss of BMD amounting to 23.9% in
the
lumbar spine in the age range under examination. The BMD of postmenopausal women whose menopause occurred before 50 was significantly less than that of women whose menopause occurred after 50. This finding suggests that early menopause is a
serious
risk
factor in postmenopausal bone loss even after 65 years of age. BMD showed a rapid and almost linear reduction within 10 years after menopause, and the total loss of BMD for 10 years after menopause was approximately 16.7%. This finding suggests
that
bone resorption occurs rapidly within 10 years after menopause and then continues slowly.
