In order to provide some bases for the control of air pollution in Korea, the author calculated the amounts of air pollutants emitted in the process of the fuel combustions by multiplying the emission factors to the fuel quantities consumed in the past 13 years from 1955 through 1967, and estimated the amounts of air pollutants of the future years of 1969 and 1971.
1. The tendency of the total energy growth during the period of 1955 to 1985, is presumed to be proportional to the growth rate of industrial product index.
2. Since 1966, the consumption rate of fuel oil showed rapid increase, while that of coal showed slow increase.
3. The estimate of air pollutant emissions in the years of 1965, 1967, 1969 and 1971, were 516,000 tons, 678,000 tons, 1,123,000 tons, and 1,431,000 tons respectively. These indicated that the estimate of air pollutants in 1971 could be 2.8 times of that in 1965.
In 1965, the consumption ratio of coal to fuel oil was 4 to 1 and the ratio was changed to 3 to 1 after ten years, but it could be estimated to be shifted approximately to 1 to 1 in 1968 and since then it would be overwhelmed by fuel oil.
4. The amount of emissions from transportation was to be changed from 21% of total pollutants in 1965 to 25% in 1971, from industry 12% to 29%, from electricity generation 20% to 11% and from space heating 48% to 35%.
5. Comparing the rate to the pollutant emissions of 1971 with those of 1965, the estimate from industry in 1971 were 7.2 times that of 1965, from electricity generation 1.5 times.
6. The amount of sulfur oxides emission in 1971 would be 2.8 times of that in 1965, nitrogen oxides 3.1 times, carbon monoxide 2.9 times, hydrocarbons 3.2 times and particulates 1.9 times.
