Abstract


This paper presents a basic observations with respect to the microstructure of dental amalgams.
A comparative photo micrographs and electron microscopic photographs on the structure cf the hardened amalgam has been done with the pellet and spherical particle alloys in the market and the lathe cut alloys made in Korea, and its particle size , were 2C0-270 ? mesh, 270-325 mesh and 325 mesh.
The results were as follows:
1) It is evident. that in fully set amalgams, there remains a large percentage of unattacked, original alloy which is embedded in a matrix.
2) An excess of mercury is allowed to remain in the set amalgam following the overtrituration of very fine grained alloys.
3) Set amalgams normally contain a certain amount of voids or empty spaces and it. is related to techniques of manipulation of the amalgam.
