Abstract


Male albino rats weighing 120-130gm. were used for this study. In order to study the tissue mast cell change elicited by an inflammation, the inner aspect of the left thigh of rats wus irradiated with various strength of ultra-violet ray (UVR).
The change of mast cells in the irradiated area, the contra-lateral area and the tongue was examined. In order to study the mechanism by which local stimulus could exert influence on the mast cell number in other part of the skin and in another organ,the following method was employed.
The serum of UVR-irradiated rats was obtained and injected subcutaneously into the inner aspect of the left thigh of normal rats. The number of mast cells in the injected area as well as the contra-lateral area of the other thigh and the tongue was examined.
1. At the UVR-irradiated area the number of mast cells started to decrease 12 hours after the irradiation. After 2 days the number of mast cell : was the least and started to increase.
2. The stornger the decrease in number of mast cells was the more intense was the re-increase, (rebound phenomenon).
3. In the non-irradiated skin the change in number of mast cells occurred only when a strong irradiation was applied to the other thigh.
4. In the tongue the pattern of the mast cell change differed according to the strength of ,the irradiation but the change could be deteced in every experiment group.
5. Between the decrease in number of mast cells and the intensity of the stimulus there was a definite correlation.
6. When the number of mast cells increased suddenly after a decrease there appeared many irregularly shaped mast cells of various size.
7. When the serum of non-irradiated rats was injected into normal rats the number of mast cells decreased in every examined area, reaching the lowest point after 12 hours of injection. After 4 days the number of mast cells returned to almost normal.
8. After the injection of UVR-irradiated serum obtained 12 and 24 hours after an irradiation the number of mast cells reached the lowest point after 24 hours of injection and recovered gradually.
9. The serum obtained 24 hours after an irradiation exerted the strongest influence on the number of mast cells in the recipient. Forty-eight hours after an irradiation the serum lost the effect of irradiation. The serum injected area showed stronger change than the contra-lateral area in every experiment group.
10. It is postulated that at least a part of the mast cell change occurred at the non-irradiated skin and the tongue in this experiment was exerted by a substance or substances liberated at the site of local stimulus and carried through blood stream.
