Abstract

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder with secondary motor symptoms such as postural instability and gait disturbance that can cause disability. The proper rehabilitation should be provided with pharmacological management in patients with PD. This review provides an overview of the rationale and various strategies of motor rehabilitation in patients with PD. Due to the various nature of motor symptoms in PD, there are many strategies for motor rehabilitation such as progressive resistance training, aerobic endurance training, cueing training, gait training, balance training and so on. Current evidence suggests that more than 4 weeks of rehabilitation may be positively effective on motor symptoms in patients with PD. However, the interventions are largely heterogeneous. Therefore, the rehabilitative program for motor symptoms in PD should be the multi-modal approach considering a number of practice variables and individual patients' characteristics.
