Abstract

Purpose: Sliding hernia is a very rare type of inguinal hernia. Reports of laparoscopic hernia repair as a treatment option for sliding hernia are very rare. In this study, we evaluated the usefulness and results of laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) hernia repair for the treatment of patients with sliding hernia.

Methods: From October 2014 to March 2019, we performed retrospective analysis of the data of patients with sliding hernia who underwent laparoscopic TAPP hernia repair at Damsoyu Hospital. Patient demographics, clinical presentation, operative details, and complications were studied.

Results: A total of 1,417 patients (average age: 55.7 years) with inguinal hernia underwent laparoscopic TAPP hernia repair, 27 (1.9%) of whom had sliding hernia. Among these, 24 (88.8%) patients had left inguinal hernia and 2 (7.4%) had right inguinal hernia. One patient (3.7%) had bilateral inguinal hernia and 3 (20%) had incarceration hernia. Sigmoid colon was the most frequent sliding component (24 cases, 88.8%), followed by the cecum and ascending colon. The average operation time was 41.5 min (range, 18∼80 min), and there were no conversion cases. The average length of hospital stay was 13.7 h. One patient had minor bleeding postoperatively and 1 had postoperative seroma.

Conclusion: Laparoscopic TAPP hernia repair is a feasible and safe treatment option for patients with sliding hernia.
