Abstract

Finding alternatives for missing teeth has been a challenge. Dental professionals consider implants a viable replacement for natural teeth with a promising functional esthetic. However, the atrophic alveolar ridge is commonly observed after the extraction of teeth in severely compromised periodontal patients, causing difficulty placing dental implants. The aim of this case report is to describe the results of short-term clinical evaluation of Lunar S implant placement with simultaneous bone grafting using a xenograft, Max-PoreTM, and a resorbable membrane. In the first patient, tooth #15 was extracted due to root fracture and #16 was removed due to peri-implantitis. At the time of implant placement, the #15 area had sufficient alveolar width for implant placement, but the #16 area had three-wall bone defects around the implant after implant placement due to previous severe peri-implantitis. Thus, we performed guided bone regeneration (GBR) with xenograft and resorbable membrane in the #16 area. In the second patient, severe periodontitis existed in the whole dentition, and the #26 and #46 teeth were extracted. The #26 area had sufficient alveolar width for implant placement, but the #46 area had three-wall bone defects around the implant after implant placement. In the #46 area, GBR was done with xenograft and resorbable collagen membrane immediately after placement of the implant at this site. In these two clinical
cases, wound healing of the operation sites was uneventful. All implants were clinically stable without inflammation or additional bone loss, and the patients reported no discomfort. Although short-term clinical evaluation is a limitation, the placement of Luna S implants to replace missing teeth could lead to good functional outcomes. In addition, successful bone regeneration can be achieved with a surgical method using xenograft and resorbable membrane.
