Effects of Exercise on Serum Levels of Irisin in High School Girls

Abstract


Background: Irisin is an exercise-induced myokine that has potent hormonal effect in mice and humans, which include promoting brown or beige adipocyte recruitment in white fat and improving systemic metabolism by raising energy expenditure. Although the level of circulating irisin is known to be increased by exercise, the efficient type of exercise for its secretion remains unknown. In addition, the serum level of irisin in aging process is still unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate circulating irisin concentration according to different modes of exercise and among 3 different age groups.

Methods: 10 healthy adolescent girls, 17 adults, and 39 elderly women volunteers participated in this study. In one side, blood samples collected before and immediately after exercise were analyzed for serum levels of irisin, especially in adolescent girls. On the other side, we conducted a cross-sectional evaluation of healthy adolescent girls, adults and elderly women volunteers with resting blood samples. Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) was used to measure the serum levels of irisin.

Results: There were no significant changes of serum irisin level immediately after an acute bout of exercise both in aerobic and resistance types. However, in elderly women, the circulating level of irisin was significantly lower (52.3 ± 10.8 ng/ml) than the levels of irisin in adolescent girls (82.3 ± 22.4 ng/ml) and adult women (112.0 ± 45.4 ng/ml) (p<0.001).

Conclusions: Levels of circulating irisin are markedly low in elderly women and might be useful as a biomarker for skeletal muscle and lipid metabolism in aging.
