Abstract

During August-October 1973, a total of 254 persons of the Korean Air Force was studied on the prevalence of oral protozoa; Entamoeba gingivalis and Trichomonas tenax. Wet smear examination and culture method were used for the detection of oral protozoa.
The results are summarized as follows;
1) Oral examination of 254 soldiers revealed 54.3% haboring oral protozoa; E. gingivalis 47.2%, T. tenax 15.4%, and both 8.3%. Of 138 oral protozoa positive samples, single infection of E. gingivalis and T. tenax was 71.7% and 13.1%, respectively, and double infection was 15.2%.
2) In the prevalence of oral protozoa according to oral hygiene status, 139 persons with periodontal disease showed 60. 4% positive for E. gingivalis and 20.9% positive for T. tenax, and 9 persons with pericoronitis showed E. gingivalis 30. 3% and T. tenax 22.2%. Of 90 normal healthy mouths, E. gingivalis and T. tenax positives were 36.7% and 8.9%, respectively. Caries, periapical abscess and other disease groups showed negative for both oral protozoa.
3) Positive rate of oral protozoa according to the site of oral cavity revealed that E. gingivalis 29.5% and T. tenax 8.9% among 78 samples collected from perio-sulcus, E. gingivalis 62.2% and T. tenax 21.1% among 151 samples from calculus, and E. gingivalis 20.0% and T. tenax 13. 3% among 15 samples from other sites. Both protozoa were not detected in 10 specimens collected from caries cavity.
The present findings indicate that positive rates of both oral protozoa increase proportionally to the periodontal index and the simplified calculus index.
