The epidemiological and social importance of the myccses car sad by Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton cor.centricuna is discussed. Tinea imbricata and Tinea circinata are common in wide areas cf South East Asia, particularly in the Pacific regicn(Solomon Islands, Hebrides, Fiji, Western- Samca, Papua and New Guinea). Studies have shown that these diseases which mostly remain untreated, are of public heath importance and that they acquire particular significance because cf the social stigma attached to their occurrence. The intra-familiar infection is more frequent than had been earlier assumed. The fungus can be confirmed from skin, garments, bedding and mats in the houses cf the infected persons. Differential susceptibility is suspected to be dependent on genetic and immunological factors (for instance defects in cellular immunity). The demand for economical therapy for these myccses makes further necessary having regard to the present high ccst of Griseofulvin and the frequency of infection.
