Abstract


A new technique for the estimation of cercarial densities of Schistosoma mansoni by differential filtration in running and standing waters.
The technique of differential filtration allows the detection, with a recovery greater than 80%, of S. mansoni cercariae in natural waters with high concentrations of micro-organisms. This technique makes use of a new type of filter NYTREL-TI of polyamide monofilament material with a pore size of 40 μm allowing the filtration of turbid water without blocking of the filter. A prefiltration column with three levels (1000, 500 and 200μm) facilitates the reading of the filter by retaining organisms larger than the cercariac. The apparatus used weighs, 3.5 Kg maximum; it does not require any source of energy and can be easily used in the field.
