Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develope an assessment tool of educational needs in leukemic children and their parents undergoing chemotherapy and to provide the basic materials for cancer patient education.
A questionnaire of educational needs of 51 items was constructed by the researcher through in-depth literature review and interv:e,-s with patients4 nurses, and doctors. The questionnaire was divided into (3 categories. These are know-ledge about leukemia itself, effects and side effects of chemotherapeutic agents, preventive measures of infection, transfusion and prevention of bleeding, health maintenance measures, and the necessity of emotional support. Sixty four subjects participated, including leukemic patients and 35 parents of leukemic children in three university hospitals.
Subjects were given instructions to rate on a 1-4 Likert type scale (not needed, 7eeded a little, needed a lot, absolutely needed) according to the degree of necessity perceived from each item described.
Reliability of the tool was tested. correlation between items by Cronbach´s alpha method was a=0.92.
The results of this study were as follows;
1. All of subjects perceived "a lot of need" about the educational needs of the 6 categories for the therapy of ´Leukemia.
2. The order of the mean score of the 6 categories by degree of necessity perceived is first, transfusion and prevention of bleeding, second, knowledge about leukemia itself, third, health maintenance measures, fourth, effects and side effects of chemotherapeutic agents, fifth, necessity of emotional support and the last, preventive measures of infection
3. There was homogenity in the 4 categories of knowledge about leukemia itself, effects and side effects of chemotherapeutic agents, transfusion and prevention of bleeding, and the necessity of emotional support-between the leukemic patients group and the parents of leukemic childrens group.
4. There was no homogenity in the 2 categories of preventive measures of infection and health maintenance measures-between the leukemic patient group and the parents group.
Further study is needed using this tool to assess the educational need of leukemic patients. Comparative study is needed of the perception of leukemic patients and of nurses about the educational needs of leukemia therapy.
