A Study on Self-Esteem and Anxiety of Inpatients with Spinal Cord Injury

Abstract


This study examined the degree of and the relationships among self-esteem, state-anxiety, and trait-anxiety of inpatients with spinal cord injury.
The purpose of this study was
1) to examine self-esteem and anxiety of in-patients with spinal cord injury,
2) to examine self-esteem and anxiety according to activities of daily living (ADL) levels of inpatients with spinal cord injury,
3) to examine self-esteem and anxiety according to type of disability of inpatients with spinal cord injury, and
4) to identify the relationship between self-esteem and anxiety of inpatients with spinal cord injury.
A survey design was used.
The subjects of this study consisted of in-patients with spinal cord injury from six hospital in Seoul.
A convenience sample of 50 subjects was selected.
The period of data collection was from August 10 to October 16, 1987.
The tools used in this study were Rosenberg´s
"Self-Esteem Scale" for the degree of self-esteem, Spielberger´s "State-Trait Anxiety Inventory" for the degree of anxiety, and "Barthel Index" for the degree of ADL level, respectively.
Analysis of data was conducted using t-test and Pearson Correlation Coefficient.
The results of this study were summarized as follows;
1) The total mean scores for the patient´s self-esteem, trait, and state anxiety were 27. 28, 54. 10 and 53.76 respectively.
2) There were significant differences of self-esteem according to the ADL level.
The patients who have higher ADL levels were found to have higher levels of self-esteem than the patients who had a lower ADL level.
3) There were significant differences of self-esteem according to the type of disability.
The patients who were paraplegic were found to have a higher level of self-esteem than the patients who were quadriplegic.
4) There were significant correlations in the relationship between and anxiety--of inpatient with spinal cord injury.
