Abstract

This article reviewed the current classification systems of Nursing intervention developed in western nursing society in terms of the structures and significance and obtained it’s meaning for nursing in Korea.
Nursing has a long history of using interventions and recently the nursing interventions are receiving increasing attention. A review of texts, projects, and articles devoted to nursing interventions reveals that diverse definitions of nursing interventions exist. This has the potential for confusion and fragmentation and may be a barrier to knowledge development related to interventions. As a common nursing language is critically important, organized nursing interventions and nursing outcomes are needed. Therefore, the great efforts to standardize and classify nursing care has been given to make explicit what has previously been implicit, assumed and unknown. By this efforts, very recently four classification systems such as NIC, OMAHA, HHCC, ICNP has been developed.
This literature review suggested why a universal understanding about what constitutes nursing intervention is critical and the classifications of the nursing intervention help to the knowledge and discovery of the principles governing what is known.
In conclusion, the studies of classification of nursing intervention and the clear definitions for specific nursing interventions in Korea are required in order to promote the development of nationwide knowledge base for nursing practice, nursing research and nursing education through the validation study with clinical trails. Also since the increasing use of computer technology in health care system in Korea for accessing information requires the use of a common language, the studies of classification are necessary to provide the entry into the computerized world.
