Abstract

This experiment was designed to find out whether or not the cardioplegic agents, potassium citrate, pot.-citrate with mag. -sulfate and acetylcholine, are injurious to the cardiac tissue, and to compare the tissue responses to these agents. The experiment was carried out in seven dogs. Through bilateral thoracotomy, both atrial appendages were exposed for a short period.
The left appendage was used as a control while the right served for experimental pouch which was filled with cardioplegic agent, left in there for 20 to 30 minuites on an average. The appendages were removed after 4 to 6 days and studied microscopically. Through this experiment following results were obtained;
1. Conc. K-citrate (25%) caused sevare myocardial necrosis and degeneration.
2. Diluted K-citrate (2.5%) caused a less severe myocardial reaction than that of conc. one.
3. The atrial pouch in which 2.46% K-citrate with 0.81% Mg-sulfate had been placed did not show any difference comparable with that found in 2.5% K-citrate.
4. Acetylcholine caused atrophy and some degeneration in myocardium.
5. No considerable differences in accordances with applied time of the agent, 20 and 30 minutes respectively, were recognized.
These findings suggest that serious injury to the dogs heart may occur when it is exposed to the cardioplegic agent that contains potasssium citrate.
