Electrocardiographic Studies in the Hypothermic Dog

Abstract


Electrocardiographic observations were made in 32 dogs subjected to experimental hypothermia. The hypothermia was induced by body surface cooling with ice-water followed by re-warming with hot water of 45 to 48C.
Throughout the procedure, hyperventilation of 700SOOcc,~Kgjmin. with room air was maintained by the aid of an automatic respirator. Standard limb leads and uripoiar extremity leads at a paper speed of 50mm/sec. were obtained in the same manner as in humanbeing.
Heart rate decreased from a normal mean value of 16:? per minute to 62 per minute at 22 1C. It returned to normal when animal was rewarmed. P-R interval, duration of QRS complex and QT interval, corrected, progressively increased with cooling and returned to normal range with re-warrring, but the amplitrde of the P wave showed no significant changes. ST segment depression was noted in a few cases at 30C and iri most cases at 221C. An Csbora wave was seen in 24 cases out of 32 usually between 22 and 25C which disappeared with re-warming. T waves became diphasic in 16 dogs and inverted in about half of the cases. With re-warming the T wave recovery appeared earlier than other electrocaradiograhic changes. No atrial fibrillation was seen in any of the
dogs. Premature ventricular contractions were-observed in 8 cases, 4 of which terminated in vetricular fibrilation, suggesting that occurrence of premature contractions may be a prefibrillatory mechanism in hypothermic animals.
