Abstract


In order to study the effect of antibiotics, antimetabolic agents and disinfectants on pyocin production, five antibiotics, two antimetabolic agents and disinfectants, and one dye were added to pyocin typing me-diem respectively and pyocin formation was ,compared to that of control media.
Streptomycin and m-nitro phenol, were selected to study the effect of drug resistants, of incubation period and temperature on pyocin
production.
Pyocin non producing strains were selected to observed the effect of ultra-violet irradiation on the pyocin inductions
1) Among the antibiotics tested, streptomycin showed an enhancing effect bzt chloramphenicol was inhibitory, Penicillin, terramycin and colistin demonstrated no effect. Acriflavin and m-nitrophenol were stimulatory at certain concentration, but disinfectants such as phenol and zephiran were inhibitory.
2) Pyocin production was increased by theprolongE~d incubation in the streptomycin containing media at 37C, ho~vever this characteri-sties was not obvious in m-nitrophenol containing media although some stimulai:ing effect of pyocin production was observed. Pyocin production was remarkably increased when incubated for 36 hours at 30C in streptomycin containing media, however, this ch;~racteristics was not clear in m-nitro phenol contarining media. The production of pyocin inactivating substance, this was not demonstrated neither in control media nor in drug co~itaining media, on the ontrary, pyocin production was enhanced by 36 hours incubation rather than 24 hours regardless of kind of media or of incubation temperature.
3) Amomg non-pyocin-producing strains test ed, pyoc;in production `vas not induced by ultra-violet irradiation.
