Abstract


The "Open Ward Policy"was newly administered to the acute psychiatric ward in the univ~:-rsity hospital setting. The therapeutic values of this policy was compared to it¢¥s previous closed ward, in the following aspects;
1. Total numbers of maladjusted behavior b;V the patient and the disposition of the staff to it were studied in two different settings.
2. Psychiatric improvement was measured oii ¢¥?0 selected cases at random in each setting. Following results were obtained:
In the open ward;
1. The number of admission was significant)}~increased. especially those of neurotic cases.
2. In the disposition making process toward maladjusted behaviors, it became apparent that the nursing staff used more of the persuasive psychological method than the restraint or deprivation one.
3. According to the reduction of destructive behavior of the patient in it¢¥s occurence, the nursing staff became more attentive to the original regressive behavior, for which he jvas admitted.
4. In the selected group of patients, ward ad justment level showed a significantly higher score.
