Electron Microscopic Study of Reticulum Cells in the Lymph Node of Rabbit Stimulated by Antigenic Substance

Abstract


Many authors have observed that lymph nodes play an important roles in body responses against antigenic stimuli. One of most interzsting findings are that one cell component of lyr.Zpi1 nodes mat: be transformed to another serves if antigenic stimilus is given. For e:~ampie, reticulum cells, som authors believe, may be transformed to lymphocytes or plasma cells. !Many problems have not yet been resolved, and wait further investigation, however.
To clarify the changes of reiiculum cells after antigenic stimuli in detail, the author injected bovine gamma globulin and incomplete Freund´s adjuvant to the rabbit foot pad and Chan;;es on the popliteal lymph node are observed.
The results were:
1. Reticulum veil in lymph node after antigenicstimuli ~; as swollen in earlier stages. In the cytoplasm at this time, pinecy totic ; esicles, rough-surfaczd endoplasmic reticulum and lysosome were increased, which suggested active pl:agocytic activity. But later, these phenomena was disappeared and reticulum cell restored to normal states.
2. In earlier stage, many reticulum cells were found after artigenic stimuli, but few plasma cells ~s-ere present on the other hand. But later, reticulum cells were decreased and immature cells (blast cells), lymphocyte and plasma cells were increased.
3. These results suggest possibility that reticulum cell may be transformed to plas.na cells and lymphocytes, but a definitz evidence of transfor:rar.´on was not found morphoiegicaliy
