Abstract

Fine structures of gastric mucosa of rats exposed to exertion stress of compulsory swimming for 30, 60 and 180 min. were studied and findings observed were as follows:
Considerable mucosal hemorrhage was seen macroscopically in 60 and 180 min. groups being more marked in the latter group.
Light microscopic examination showed only minimal congestion of superficial layer of gastric mucosa in 30 min. group and the mucosal congestion became marked in 60 and 180 min. groups: No evidence of mucosal desturuction was observed in 30 min. group, while only minute focal necrosis was infrequently seen in superificial mucosal layer in 60 and 180 min. groups.
Changes of fine structures of surface mucous cell were seen already in 30 min. group showing mild degenerative changes in mitochondria and nucleus and partial widening of intercellular space which became marked in 60 and 180 min. groups. Mucous neck cell also showed mild changes, i. e. degenerative changes of mitochondria and nucleus, appearance of dark body in cytoplasm and atrophy of villi of apical plasmalemma which were observed only in 180 min. group.
Changes in fine structures of chief cell were more marked than those of mucous cells showing degenerative changes of mitochondria, marked dilatation of rER, dilatation of cisterna of Golgi apparatus, irregularity and rupture of membrane of zymogen granule, heterochromatin of nucleus, decrease of prominence of nucleolus and widening of nuclear envelope. These changes were seen in 180 min. group.
Most marked changes in fine structures were observed in parietal cell.
In 30 min. group, there noted enlargement of vesicular elements, prominence of intracellular secretory canaliculi, mild degenerative changes in mitochondria and nucleus. In 60 min. group, the changes became extensive showing extreme dilatation and rupture of vesicular elements, disappearance or marked dilatation of intracellular secretory canaliculi, marked degenerative changes of mitochondria (derrangement of cristae, decrease of electron density, swelling or shrinkage, rupture and other various degenerative features), appearance of focal cytoplasmic degradation, dark body in cytoplasm and degenerative changes of nucleus (heterochromatin, decrease of prominence of nucleolus and widening if nuclear envelope etc). In 180 min. group, however, these changes were of far less degree suggesting the changes of 60 min. group were reversible. This recovery may to due to adaptation to the stress.
