Abstract


Retrospective clinical evaluation was done concerning differential diagnosis between benign and malignant gastric ulcer based on 331 cases whose initial fiberscopic diagnosis was benign, amon3; 2000 cases of fiberscopies performed durin; the past 5_ years and 5 months from Jan., 1968 to Jun., 1973; at the Endoscopy Room of Kyungpook National University Hospital. And the findings obtained could be summarized as follows:
1. There were 13 cases of malignant ulcer proved by surgery which were read as benign by fiberscopy. This is about 15.1 0 of toal 86 cases of benign-looking gastric ulcers including 43 `vho underwent surgery and 44 cases who were confirmed to be benign by follotiv-up fiberscopies.
2. There were 14 cases whose ulcers were read as malignant by fiberscopy but were found to be benign by surgery. This is about16.1% of total, 87 cases of benign gastric ulcers confirmed by surgery (43 cases) or follow-up fiberscopies (44 cases).
