Abstract


In an attempt to better understand the hepatotoxic effect of carbon tetrachloride (CCL~), and to observe a possible toxic effect of CC14 on the lung tissue, the experiment was devided into two parts.
In Experiment I , 1.Oml CCla/kg BW was administered intraperitoneally to the rabbit and the changes of protein, GSH and GSSG of the liver and lung tissues were studied on 1, 3, 5, and 7 days after the injection.
In Experiment II , 0.5m1 CC19/kg BtiV was similarly administered, and the same study was made on 1, 2 and 3 weeks after the injection.
The changes of body weight and liver weight were measured, and the liver weight/body weight ratios were thus calculated.
The results obtained are summarised as follows:
1) The protein and GSH contents of the liver in Exp. I were gradually decreased till 7th day of CC14 intoxication. GSSG was slightly elevated on the 1st d~iy, but a gradual decrease was observed on 3rd and 5~h day with a similar value to the control on the 7th day.of CC14 intoxication.
2) In Exp. II . protein and GSH of the liver were decreased till 3rd week of the intoxication, but the tendency was not as prominent as in Exp. I GSSG did not change noticeablly from the control.
3) Protein, GSH and GSSG contents of the lung in Exp. I showed a slight decrease throughout. the experiment, but on the 7th day the value became similar to the control. -
4) Decrease of the protein content in Exp. II was most prominent in 1st week, but a tendency of returning to the control value was observed thereafter. The values of GSH and GSSG were generally lower than the control, but the values on 3rd week were most prominent.
5) In Exp. I , the body weight of the rabbit was decreased gradually till 7th day, but the liver weight increased slightly. Thus, the liver wt/body wt ratios were elevated from the control value of ].7.28 throughout the experiment.
6) In Exp. Il , the body weight was decreased till 3rd week while the liver weight increased. Thus, the liver wt/body wt ratios shoved the elevated values throughout the experiment.
