Abstract

Halothane (2bromo2chloro1:1:1trifluoroethane) is recently used as a good inhalating anesthetics because of its minimal stimulus to the respiratory system. Its undesirable effects are decrease of blood procure and respiratory rate.
The author studied the effects of halothane anesthesia to the fine structure of Iung tissue experir_ientally. Nine albino rats were moderately anesthetized with halothane for 60 minites. Each of the experimental animal was sacrificed immediately, four hours and 12 hours after the anesthesia, respectively. Lungs were extirpated and examined using both the light and electron :~:icroscopes.
The results are summarized as follows:
1) Light microscopically, lung showed a r,.7ild degree o1¢¥ congestion, interstitial edema, thickening 01 the alveolar septae and increase of alveolar cells. secretory activity of bronchioles ;vas not increased.
2) Electron microseepically, osmiophilic inclusion body of the type jj alveolar cells shop; ed increase in number, pleomorphism, increase or decrease of densit3>, vacuolization and extrusicr_ of the bodies from the cells. Whorl formation of the ER was occasionally noted in type j[ alveolar cells. Four and L hours .after the anesthesia, a mild increase in numbur of the type Q alveolar cells was noted.
The endothelia) cells- of alveolar capillary chewed a marked increase of pinocytotic vesicles, dilatation of rER> and vacuolization immediately after the anesthesia but these changes subsided after four to twelve hours.
The type I alveolar cells showed unremarkable change. Alveolar macrophages showed an increase in number and increase of autophagic vacuoles after four to twelve hours.
3) These results suggest that halothane anesthesia induces a mild degree of degenerative or adaptive changes in the osmiophilic inclusion body of the type II alveolar cells, and induces mild degree of degenerative changes in the endothelial cells of alveolar capillary, which are reversible and recovered within I2 hours.
