Abstract

Cardiopulmonary effects of the vagal blocking with atropine in the hypercalcemic dogs were studied. ´The purpose of this study is to observe the vagal influence in the production of functional. alterations cf circulation and respiration by hypercalcemia. In this experiment, dogs were given. atropine sulfate (0.032mg/kg.) intravenously immediately followed by intravenous infusion of 10% calcium gluconate.
Pertinent data in these dogs were transient elevations of fc~moral artery mean pressure and right ventricular systolic pressure, and significant decreases in femoral venous pressure, pulmonary artery mean pressure and total pulmonary resistance. Also noted were significant increases in respiratory rate, :minute ventilation, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxides elimination and arterial oxygen saturation.,
In comparison of these results to those in dogs in which cs~lcium alone was given, decreases in femoral venous pressure, pulmonary artery mean pressure and total pulmonary resistance in the former were less marked than in the latter, whereas increases in respiratory rate, minute ventilation and carbon dioxide elimination were less pronounced.
These results suggest that among various cardiopulmonary effects of hypercalcemia those on systemic hemodynamic are not significantly affected by the vagus but the increase in ventilation induced by hypercalcemia is closely related to the vagal tone.
