Abstract

The author studied the cenforma*_tonal changes of the cytocavitary network of submaxil_lary acinar cells after pilccarpine injection in rat. The results were summarized as follow:
1. The acini of rat submaxillary gland wire composed of two typs of cell: Serous cells with small electron dense granles and mucous cells with large eaectron lucent granules.
2. Pilccarpine induced a marked activation of secretory processes in both cell types, characterized by :fragmentation of rER with formation of Golgi cisterr~ae, proliferation of Golgi complex and formation of secretory granules from Golgi complex. Also induced rv~re mild degenerative changes, such as increased autophagecytosis and lysosomes.
3. Fragmentation of rER and proliferation of Golgi .complex have reached to the maximum degree 4~ hrs after pilccarpine injection. After then recover~;d slowly. The formation cf secretory ~ granules started 67 hrs after pilccarpine injection.
4. These changes observed i¢¥n mucopolysaccharide producing cells appeared to be quite similar to the changes known to occur in other protein secreting cells.
