Abstract


In an atternp to observe the effect of ~3-irradiation on the glutathione content of the lens, 6, 000 rad of strontium 90 ,3-ray was irradiated in Vitro to the lens which isolated from the normal rabbit eye. The contents of reduced glutathione (GSH) were measured by the method described ley Ellman at one and three hours after the irradiation, and results were compared with the normal and the control groups. The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1) The content of GSH in the normal group was 59.11.53 ~rnol/gm wet Pvt.
2) In the control groups, the GSH content was 57.531.50 ~mol/gm wet Pvt. but the difference from the normal value was not statistically significant.
3) In the (3-irradiated group, GSH content was 64.31.99 ~mol/gm wet wt.´ at one post-irradia= tion hour and 64.21.09 ~mol/gm wet wt. at three post-irradiation hours but no significant difference was observed in the irradiated group. However, comparing with the normal and control groups, the GSH contents of the irradiated group was significantly elevated.
