Abstract

Snimonella typhi and S.paratyphi A isolated in Korea during the period from 1968 to 1975 were tested for the antimicrobial resistance and distribution of :R factors. Among 949 strains of S. typl~i, the resistance `vas mostly restricted to streptomycin. (S~~I) and sulfisomidine (SA), singly or in combination at low degree. A small number of strains was resistant to four or more drugs of chleramphenicol (CSI), tetracycline (TC), SM, SA, ampiciIlin (AP) and kanamycin (I{M). No strain was resistant to nalidixic acid or to 1:20 mixture of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole.´ ´for was are any strain singly resistant to CiV1. TC. AP and K~I. Thcrc were some strains resist;~nt ro tCY1. S\I and SA among 3G strains of S. paratyphi A. Ten strains of S. typhi were multiply resistant to C.I. TC. SM and SA, and four to C~~1. TC, S:~[. SA. AP and KM. The resistance to multiply drugs was transferred to Escherichia coli i~IL 1410 NA´. Two transfter factors -ere noted; one conferring resistance to Cibl. TC, Ski and 5A. and the other resistance to AP and KM. Transferable CM resistance was also noted in one strain. The frequency of resistance transfer differed by strains but not by the selecting drugs. The transfer frequency of CM, TC, ShI and SA resistance was between 10-´0 to 10-´´´ and of AP and K1~I resistance between 10-aa to 10-s~. The resistance of S. typhi was more efficiently transferred to E. coli at 25 C than at ~7 C. Resistance to CM, TC and SA was stable, but the resistance to SiVI of S. typhi and Rt conjugants decreased slightly during preservation at room temperature for one year.
