Abstract

The manpower who perform agricultural pursuits in rural Korea are faced not only with problems arising from the lack of labor population. but also the maintenance of a suitable state of general health among their farmers.
As in most developing countries, local and national health facilities are somewhat limited and disease is so wide sprea that a certain loss of manpower among the residents occurs.
The aim of this study was to determine the loss of productive manpower in rural areas due to illness.
The Namchun myun, Kyungsan county(gun), community health project was initiated in 1972 with studies of health status and family planning. In 1974, 1, 438 individuals were selected from the rural population to evaluate the degree of loss of the manpower in a community.
In general, the morbidity rate was somewhat higher in both the youngest age and the older age groups, and it was lower in the 10 and 20 year-age groups, thus showing a U-shaped frequency distribution. The most frequently encountered disease was respiatory disease (18%), followed in order of prevalence by: Digestive disease(10%), Neuromuscular disease(6%), Communicable disease(5%), Parasitic disease(1%), and Circulatory disease(1%).
Of those patients experiencing illness, 48.3 percent were incapacitaled by the severity of the illness while the mean length of incapacitation ws 18 days.
The average number of days of lost manpower in the productive age groups was 23 days and the average number of lost days was higher in males than in females.
In the study area the total number of days of manpower lost because of illness during the study period was 68,000 days within the reproductive age groups (total population in the study area was 6,151).
