Abstract


In an attempt to observe possible effects of ether, halothane and methoxyflurane anesthesia on the surface tension of tracheobronchial and alveolar washings in the rabbits, the each surface tension wa measured from the tracheobronchial and alveolar washings of rabbits after they were subjected to anesthessia with ether, halothane and methoxyflurane for one hour by non-rebrathing system.
The comparison ws made with the surfaco tension of tracheobronchial and alveolar washings from control group and the results are summarized as follows;
The maximal surface tension, minimal surface tension and stability index of tracheobronchial and alveolar washings of normal rabbits were 55.6±3.47dyne/㎝, 10.8±3.44dyne/㎝, 1.40±0.246 and 54.8±3.86dyne/㎝, 15.3±3.43dyne/㎝, 1.13±0.135respectively.
In the ether anesthesia group, minimal surface tension of alveolar washings was prominently increased and stability index was decreased, but the minimal surface tension of tracheobronchial washing did not change from the control group.
It is conluded that ether anesthesia produces a definite inhibitory effects of the activities of the surfactant.
The inhalation anesthesia with halothane or methoxyflurane did not produce any significant change in the surface tension of tracheobronchial and alveola washings.
