Abstract

The author studied the subcllular organelles of lepr cells and their pathologic significances in the skin lesions. Punch biopsies from the grossly active skin lesions were obtained from five confirmed lepromatous leprosy patients attending to Depatement of Dcrmatology of Kyungpook National Univcrsity Hospital and Taegu Fatima Hospital. The paraffin embedded tissue sections were examined under the light microscope with the aids of hematoxylin and eosin staining and Ziehl-Neelsen staining. The ultrathin sections embedded in epoxyresin medium were prepared by Reynold´s electron double staining and examined under the electron microscope.
The results obtained were summarized as follow:
In the light microscopc, all biopsies showed extensive cellular infiltration in the dermis including numerous macrophages containing large numbers of acid fast bacilli. In the electron microscope, three special morphologic types of lysosomes were recognized in the Virchow cells. They were regarded the organelles previously reffered to as opaquc droplets, foamy stuctures and leprosy inclusion respectively.
