Abstract

The electrocardiograms of 573 cases with the "early repolarization syndrome(normal variant of ST segment elevation) seen among 33, 779 cases foc the past 14 years at the Kyungpook University Hospital were analysed to delineate the features ol` this electrocardiographic entity.
The overall incidence of this early repolarization syndrome was 1.7 per cent, bein; most frequent in fourth decade. The most common underlying diseases were gastrointestinal diseases and psychiatric disorders, and ten per cent of cases were found in apparently healthy persons. This syndrome was encountered most frequently in leads V.,, Va, V; and Vs in the order of decreasing frequency _and in 95 per cent of cases the height of ST segment elevation was below t´aree milimeters, and there was tendency to decrease in incidence after the sixth decade. The patterns of J point were variable, the pattern of slurred J being most frequent with following distinct J and J wave pattern.
Among other electrocardiographic findings associated with this syndrome, the incidence of tall symmetrically limbed T wave was found in 65.6 per cent, and that of various T wave changes in 23.5 per cent. Among them juvenile T wave pataern was most frequent and a few cases with labile and isolated T wave pattern were also seen. Less commonly found were pseudo-R´ <<: ayes, tall R waves in left precordial leads, and countercaockwise rotation was found in over half of the cases.
Among 65 cases whose electrocardiograms were i.aken twice or riore, the ST segment elevation persisted in 42 cases and disappeared in nine cases. The elevation of ST segment in one case disappeared after hyperventilation and in another one case not after hyperventilation but after exercise loading.
