Yearly Nell-Baby Contest has been ile lc! in order to recognize the iniix~:~tance of the child´s g.[~~.~-r!; and c´~~-elopment. After throughful investigation of the several iil:portart parameters _including their physical. development (body -eight, length, chest and dead circumference;, nutritional status (I~aap I::de.~. hemoglobin and signs of the vitamin D deficiency) and the Feeding history, the following results were ob~ained.
Comparing Their body weight, len~,th, chess and ´head circumference with Korean Childreds Growth Standard (Ii. S.) and Japanese Children´s Growth Standard (J. S. ), their body weight -ere superior to those of K. S. (1.56-~4.141~g) and J. S. (1.25~2.941~:g), their body length superior to those of I~. S. (2.75 --8.37cm) and J. S. (? 28-~-5.08cm), their chest circumference superior to t:´~ose of a~. S. (2.53-~-5.54em) and J. S. (2.33 ~4.9Zcm), and their head cirumference superior to those of K. S. (-.~. 62-~2.15cm) and J. S. (0.22~1.31cm).
The majority (81.7 0) of the infants were born at the hospital or clinic, followed by come is 14.0?o and midwife´s in 4.30.
The kaup Index was above 20 in 19.3% of male infant and x.6.5 0 of female infant.
Breast feeding was the most common for_n of the infant feeding, comprising 46.0/"0, followed icy mired reeding in 41.2% and bottle feeding in 12.8%.
Weanin was started within 6 months of age in 55.6;: of she infants and the majority o: the infants within 12 months of age.
About one fifth (male infants; 18.1%, female infant:; 17.3%) of the infants showed anemia, using the criteria of anemia as being hemoglobin less than 10.5gm o Incidence was the highest among breast-fed infants (30.1%), followed by bottle fed infants (8.5%) and mixed-fed infants (~´ 3%)
In about one fifth of the infants (21.6jo), there were signs of the Vitamin D deficiency including Harrison´s groo~-e, rachitic rosary, pigeon chest etc. , and no difference was noticed between different types of feeding.
In 25.7% of the infants supplemental vitamin D was given and 22.7% of the infants was given. iron as sti~~plement.
The conclusion arrived from these results indicated that their physical growth was quite good but nu:riionai ~t~.tus was inadequate, represented in many infants such as signs of the vitamin D deficiency ~.inc aacmia. It is hoped that by education ;and guidance of the mothers, especially about the prope_ leeding method, infant growth and development could be improved further.
